Special Programs
To address the diverse needs of our patients and to eliminate the
many barriers to access they face, Baltimore Medical System (BMS)
has developed special programs.
These services and programs are designed for patients who
have a difficulty finding and receiving health care, whether
due to lack of financial resources or health insurance, language
or cultural barriers, transportation difficulties, or any other
obstacles.
Deaf Services
Our Deaf Services staff provides American Sign Language interpretation,
care coordination and health education for deaf patients at our
Highlandtown Community Health Center. Deaf patients come from all
parts of Maryland for the unique services and assistance provided
by our Deaf Services staff.
For more information, contact the Deaf
Services Program Manager, Donna Walters, at 410-558-4737 or at Donna.Walters@bmsi.org.
International Services
A growing number of refugees from around the world are arriving
and settling in Baltimore through the Baltimore Resettlement Center,
located directly across the street from our Highlandtown Community
Health Center. BMS provides initial health screenings and ongoing
medical care to these refugees through our International Services
program, which provides translation services for nearly 150 languages.
For more information, call 410-558-4950.
Hispanic Services
Baltimore's Hispanic population has been rapidly increasing
since the early 1990s. In response to this demographic shift, BMS
established the Hispanic Services Program at our Highlandtown Community
Health Center. We
have bilingual staff in virtually every part of the health center
and signage, forms, and other materials in Spanish, making it easier
for Hispanic patients to receive needed health care. There is also
a staff of interpreters for patients with limited English Proficiency.
For more information, call 410-558-4950.
School-Based Health Centers
BMS operates four school-based
health centers (see below) that provide well-child and sports physicals,
immunization updates, family planning, health education and treatment
for acute illnesses. For many of these children, these school-based
health centers are their primary source of health care.

Family Perinatal Services
Prenatal care is far from automatic for many women in communities
served by BMS. Unfortunately, too many of these women see an Obstetrician
for the first time during their pregnancy at the time of delivery.
A full-time BMS registered nurse goes out into these communities
and enrolls pregnant women in prenatal care during their first trimesters,
providing on-going monitoring of prenatal care and conducting childbirth
and parenting preparation classes. For more information, contact
the Family Perinatal Service Nurse Manager, Brenda Reynolds, at
410-558-4071 or at Brenda.Reynolds@bmsi.org.
Outreach and Access
BMS employs an Outreach and Access staff to increase awareness of
available services. This team participates in community
health fairs and events, attends community and business meetings
and organizes events to reach potential patients.
The Outreach and Access Department offers many services and classes, including:
- Quit Smoking Classes
- Breast Health Education and Screenings
- Cancer Prevention & Screenings
For more informationon on these programs, or for other questions regarding Outreach and Access, please contact Earline Washington, Outreach and Access Program Manager, at 410-558-4982 or at Earline.Washington@bmsi.org.
